The idea of establishing a national classification society in Oman dates back to the late 1980s, when two prominent figures, Dr. Ali Alavi, a prominent Omani lawyer and expert, and Dr. Hassan Zia, an international expert in the maritime industry, met around 1989 and formed a friendship and cooperation.
In those years, the first steps towards a serious presence in Oman's maritime industry began with the purchase of several large Oil and Chemical Tankers. This practical experience, along with port management activities in the Sur Industrial Estate area, provided a platform for a deeper understanding of the real capacities and needs of Oman's maritime industry.
One of the important gaps was the lack of a national classification society in Oman. This concern was pursued with great intensity, becoming the main agenda of MCI. In collaboration with reputable international societies such as Bureau Veritas (BV) of France, the establishing of Oman's maritime Rules and regulations and the recruitment of Omani experts have made this maritime society a reliable and trustworthy institution.
Today, with the policies of Oman's Vision 2040, this development path has become even more prominent.
"The story of Marine Classification Institution is actually the story of two ideas: the idea of a visionary Omani sheikh and the idea of an international maritime expert, who together turned the long-standing dream of Oman's maritime industry into a tangible reality."
